Lincoln City have announced the signing of young striker Mason Melia on a one-year loan deal from Tottenham Hotspur. The 18-year-old earned himself a record £1.6 million move to north London after seriously impressing for St Patrick’s Athletic, who play their football in the League of Ireland Premier Division.

What Happened?

Melia burst onto the scene in Ireland’s top flight, becoming the youngest scorer in the league’s history at 15 before going on to net 21 league goals in 76 games, establishing himself as one of the brightest young talents in the country. In pre-season, Melia came on as a substitute for Spurs and played 25 minutes in their 1-1 draw with Australian outfit Sydney FC.

Why It Matters for Lincoln City

The ambition of the club really stood out to Melia, who said: “I’m delighted to be here and get everything completed. Everyone I’ve met has been so welcoming, and I’m excited to get going in the Championship. The presentation was unbelievable, and it played a huge part in my decision to come here because it showed me the club’s vision and what we can achieve together.”

What Comes Next?

Melia is set to arrive at the ProAmpac Stadium to provide competition for Rob Street and Freddie Draper in the striker position. At just 18-years-old, the Tottenham prospect has also already managed to make two senior appearances for the Republic of Ireland national team, with his debut coming on May 28 in a 1-0 win against Qatar where he came off the bench in the 90th minute.

He is set to bring a new level of competition to the striker position at Lincoln City, and fans are excited to see him in action.
